make these headaches or migraines STOP!
Here’s something a lot of people don’t know. Their TMJ could be at the root of their unending, constant headaches and migraines, facial pain and discomfort in their neck, shoulders and back pain.
When your temporomandibular joint (your TMJ) is unaligned, the muscles around your head, face and neck are repeatedly strained. Everything you do causes further stress on that joint and also on those muscles. Even when you are relaxing, the muscles are not really relaxing; they aren’t resting in their natural position and then excess stress is added (due to the misaligned joint). All this strain on the muscles in your head, face, and neck can cause headaches, TMJ migraines and soreness in all those connected muscles.
When your muscles are always strained, eventually you are going to feel it somewhere and a lot of times, it shows up in the form of a tension headache. TMJ headaches can also be caused by blood pressure build-up. When your muscles are strained, they prevent blood from flowing to the right places. When this happens, your body tries to fix the problem by sending more blood to the area, which just increases the blood pressure. This feeling of pressure around the head (called a vascular headache) can be really painful.
TMJ headaches are often so painful and frequent that they are often misdiagnosed as migraines. Migraine headaches are mainly on one side of your head and are usually supplemented with visual disturbances and extreme sensitivity to light. The treatment for migraine headaches is much different from TMJ headaches so it’s critical a trained medical professional make the distinction.
